A mind-reading trick that amazes the audience with its ingenuity. Perfect for adding a touch of magic to your party.

From the All Eyes on Me retro party-game collection, this old-fashioned favourite brings simple fun to a modern gathering.

At a glance

Players: 4+ players.
You will need: Two performers and a rehearsed number code.
Cost: Free instructions; use items you already have. Optional props or prizes may cost extra.

How to play

  1. Choose a performer and a secret helper. Before play, rehearse a code for digits 0–9: for example, taps on a pencil, with a clear pause between digits and a separate signal for zero.
  2. The performer leaves while the audience chooses a number from 0 to 999 and tells the helper.
  3. The performer returns and asks everyone to concentrate. The helper quietly transmits each digit in order.
  4. The performer announces the number with a theatrical flourish.
  5. Repeat with a new number, then reveal the code if the audience wants to try performing the trick.

Host’s tip

Practise the pauses before the party; the trick works through a code rather than actual mind reading.

Agree on the rules before you start. Guests can join, adapt a movement or pass; use points or optional playful challenges wherever the retro rules mention forfeits.
