How can you feel wonderful on your wedding day? Start with a dress that feels like you.
A wedding dress can become part of the memories and photographs you keep for years. But choosing it does not have to mean chasing someone else’s idea of perfection. The right dress should suit your personal style, feel comfortable and let you enjoy the celebration.
Make-up, hair and accessories can complete your look, but your gown should work with you. Give yourself time to explore your options, and ask a bridal consultant or alterations specialist for help with fit when you need it.
Decide what you are comfortable spending before you begin shopping. Think about the whole outfit: the dress, alterations, underwear, shoes, veil and accessories.
Tell the boutique or consultant your budget so the options you try are realistic. A beautiful wedding outfit does not need to be the most expensive one in the room.
Take a supportive person whose opinion you value — a friend, parent, sibling or another loved one. Honest feedback can help, but you do not need a large audience for every decision.
The person wearing the dress has the final say. Choose company that helps you feel relaxed, heard and confident.
Consider where and when the wedding will take place. A formal indoor ceremony, a garden celebration and a beach wedding may call for different fabrics, lengths and levels of detail.
Think about the weather, walking surfaces, travel between venues and how easily you can sit, dance and move. Let the setting guide your choice without limiting your personal style.
Try a range of silhouettes rather than assuming there is only one style for your body. A-line, ball gown, sheath, fit-and-flare and other cuts can feel very different once you put them on.
Notice what you enjoy wearing and which details you want to highlight. You do not need to hide your body or follow rigid rules about who can wear a particular style.
Move around during the fitting. Sit down, lift your arms and walk in shoes of a similar height to those you plan to wear. A gown that looks beautiful should also feel secure and comfortable.
Your wedding dress does not have to be white. Ivory, cream, champagne, blush, lilac and bolder colours are all possibilities if they feel right for you.
Hold fabrics near your face and compare them in different light where possible. Choose the colour you enjoy wearing, whether it matches your wedding theme or becomes its own statement.
If you prefer a white or ivory gown, you can still bring in colour through beading, embroidery, jewellery, a garter, shoes or other accessories.
Ask the boutique or maker about the expected delivery date and how many fittings may be needed. Arrange alterations with enough time to check the finished fit before your wedding.
Bring the shoes and underwear you plan to wear to the relevant fittings, and ask about details such as managing a train, fastening the gown and moving comfortably.
If you are buying off the rack, second-hand or online, consider the fit and any alterations before deciding that the dress is the right choice.
Once you have chosen your gown, think about the veil, hair accessories and jewellery as part of the same look. They can support the dress without competing for attention.

The perfect wedding dress is the one that helps you feel comfortable, confident and present on your day. Your wedding photographs can capture that feeling, whatever style, size, colour or budget you choose.
