How to play

1. Show the audience a hat and a sugar cube or paper token.
2. Announce: ‘I can put this sugar under a hat without placing the hat on the table’.
3. Keep the token clearly in your hand.
4. Put the hat on your own head, then hold the token below it at chest level.
5. Reveal that the token is now literally ‘under the hat’.

Host’s tip

This wordplay version keeps the old joke without asking anyone to swallow a prop.
