A mysterious and entertaining game involving a “spirit” that selects one player as its resting place. This game is all about clever coordination between the performer and their confederate.

From the All Eyes on Me retro party-game collection, this old-fashioned favourite brings simple fun to a modern gathering.

At a glance

Players: 4+ players.
You will need: Two performers and a rehearsed signal.
Cost: Free instructions; use items you already have. Optional props or prizes may cost extra.

How to play

  1. Choose a performer and a helper. Agree that the helper will say ‘The spirit rests’ only above the chosen guest.
  2. The performer leaves. The group chooses a willing guest as the spirit’s imaginary resting place.
  3. The performer returns while the helper slowly moves a hand above different guests without touching them, saying ‘The spirit moves’.
  4. At the chosen guest, the helper says ‘The spirit rests’. The performer names that guest.
  5. Change roles and enjoy the theatrical reveal.

Host’s tip

Present it as a simple performance trick. For a less obvious version, rehearse a subtle verbal cue.

Agree on the rules before you start. Guests can join, adapt a movement or pass; use points or optional playful challenges wherever the retro rules mention forfeits.
