Outdoor games designed to take full advantage of a garden setting, perfect for active and spirited play.

From the All Eyes on Me retro party-game collection, this old-fashioned favourite brings simple fun to a modern gathering.

At a glance

Players: Two or more teams.
You will need: Outdoor space and household game props.
Cost: Free instructions; use items you already have. Optional props or prizes may cost extra.

How to play

  1. Choose three or four activities suited to your garden and guests. Mark a start, finish and clear boundaries.
  2. Spoon relay: carry a potato or beanbag on a spoon to a bowl, then tag the next teammate.
  3. Capture the Flag: give each team a coloured flag. Try to retrieve the other flag using agreed gentle tagging rules, with no tackling.
  4. Garden rounders: use a soft ball, a lightweight bat and clearly marked bases. Batters run while fielders return the ball to the bowler.
  5. Sack race: use sturdy sacks on level grass, or offer a walking relay alongside it.
  6. Tug of war: use a suitable rope with no loops around hands, a centre marker and evenly matched teams. Stop immediately if anyone falls.
  7. Score points for each activity and finish with a shared team celebration.

Host’s tip

The old themed capture game is refreshed as neutral Capture the Flag. Choose two or three games rather than trying to fit in everything.

Agree on the rules before you start. Guests can join, adapt a movement or pass; use points or optional playful challenges wherever the retro rules mention forfeits.
