A celebration that suits the guest of honour

A bucks night in Australia, or bachelor party in the US, can be adventurous, relaxed, creative or simply a good meal with friends. Ask the person being celebrated what they want before booking a surprise.

Discuss activities, alcohol, travel, spending and boundaries. A joint pre-wedding celebration is also an option if that suits the couple. There is no need to copy an expected formula.

Give one organiser a clear role

A best man, best person, wedding-party member, relative or trusted friend may coordinate the event. Choose one organiser/organizer to keep the guest list, calendar and budget together. Give helpers specific tasks.

Confirm who should be invited. Avoid assuming every wedding guest belongs on the party list or that everyone can afford a weekend away.

3–6 months ahead: plan around people and cost

Use this as a flexible starting point. Enquire earlier for travel, major events or limited availability, and adapt it for a smaller local celebration.

  • Agree a date with room for rest before the wedding.
  • Check availability and a realistic per-person budget.
  • Explain whether the group plans to cover any of the guest of honour’s costs.
  • Compare activity, venue, accommodation and transport options.
  • Read deposit, cancellation, refund and minimum-number conditions.
  • Collect commitments before making expensive group bookings.

Choose activities people can enjoy

A meal, live event, escape room, games night, workshop or outdoor outing can provide a shared experience. Ask about accessibility, health considerations, experience levels and the provider’s participation requirements.

Make more demanding activities optional and offer an easy way to join a meal or another part of the event instead. Do not pressure anyone to drink, gamble, spend more or take part in an activity they have declined.

6–12 weeks ahead: confirm the practical details

Make bookings according to provider deadlines and send clear cost information. Include travel, clothing, equipment and anything guests need to bring.

If you want a theme, choose optional details the person actually likes. A wrist accessory, small keepsake or game prop can be enough. Ask about sizes and allow time for personalised or handmade items. These details can suit any gender; they are not compulsory party uniform.

2–4 weeks ahead: final checks

  • Confirm numbers, meal choices and accessibility arrangements.
  • Check balances and communicate any changes clearly.
  • Confirm transport and a suitable way home.
  • Check ordered items and have an alternative if a parcel is delayed.
  • Send meeting points, timings, organiser contact and provider instructions.
  • Agree any photograph or social-media preferences.

On the day: keep the celebration considerate

Leave time for travel and meals. Provide non-alcoholic options and keep activities within the group’s agreed limits. Follow venue and activity-provider instructions, and arrange transport that does not rely on someone driving after drinking.

Avoid humiliating surprises, unwanted photographs or turning an opt-out into a challenge. Let people leave when needed. A successful event is one the guest of honour and their friends can remember warmly.
